Panini Donruss & Optic: Vinícius Júnior's Rookie-Card Home (Set Review & Buying Guide)

Long before Topps held the UEFA Champions League license, Panini Donruss was the set that gave Vinícius Júnior his most collected rookie-year card — the 2018 Donruss Soccer Rated Rookie #177. The flagship: 2018 Donruss Rated Rookie #177

The Rated Rookie shield is Donruss’s signature rookie designation, and Vinícius’s is #177. It comes in two forms that share that number:

• Base Donruss #177 — the paper Rated Rookie. The affordable, high-population entry point and the card most people mean by “his Donruss rookie.”
• Donruss Optic #177 — the chromium (refractor-style) version of the same card. Shinier, photographs better, and grades cleaner, so it generally sits a tier above the paper base.

Because the two share the #177 slot, always read the listing carefully: “Donruss” and “Donruss Optic” are different cards at different price levels even though the number matches.

The parallel ladder

Donruss builds value through parallels, and the ladder is where most of the money — and confusion — lives:

• Press Proof parallels on base Donruss — colored-border/foil variants named by color; Press Proof Red is one of the confirmed colors circulating on his #177.
• Optic Holo and Prizm-pattern parallels — the unnumbered chrome finishes.
• Numbered Optic parallels — colored refractors serial-numbered to a set print run. The lower the number, the scarcer and more valuable.

Road to the World Cup (Brazil, not Madrid)

Panini also issues Vinícius in Donruss Road to the World Cup and Road to Qatar — national-team cards where he wears Brazil rather than the Real Madrid whites of his club issues. These exist in base Donruss and Donruss Optic (with the same Holo/Prizm parallel treatment), and they’re a distinct, affordable subset that pairs with our World Cup & Brazil cards reference.

This subset recurs every World Cup cycle, and — like every Donruss product outside the 2018 flagship — each edition renumbers its own checklist, so none of these share the #177 slot:

Donruss FIFA — the club-issue branding after 2018

The 2018 flagship is the one everyone means by “his Donruss rookie,” but Panini’s Donruss family for him didn’t stop there. Later club-issue base cards carry “Donruss FIFA” branding instead of plain “Donruss” — same Panini Donruss design lineage, same Real Madrid club-issue intent, different name on the box. The 2022-23 Donruss FIFA #103 is the one currently in our in-stock grid below; if you see “Donruss FIFA” on a listing, it’s a legitimate later-year sibling of the 2018 set, not a knockoff — just a different card number, so don’t assume it’s #177.

How to buy

For the base Rated Rookie and common parallels, a raw copy in a sleeve and toploader is fine and inexpensive. For the higher-tier numbered Optic parallels and autographs — or any card you’re holding rather than enjoying — buy it already graded (PSA or SGC) so you’re paying for a verified grade, not a photo. Whatever the tier, check recent solds before you commit; live listings show what’s available, solds show what it actually trades for.
